Telescope or binoculars: where to start in astronomy

Why a good pair of binoculars is often a better first purchase than a cheap telescope, and when it makes sense to skip straight to a telescope.

Anyone starting out in astronomy tends to assume the first step is buying a telescope. But several specialist guides — including one from NASA/JPL specifically dedicated to this question — agree on advice that sounds counterintuitive: binoculars are usually a better first purchase than a cheap telescope. This isn’t a consolation recommendation for people on a tight budget — it’s a practical matter of what you can actually see, how easy it is, and how much room there is for a costly mistake the first time around.

What the numbers mean: 7x50, 10x50, 15x70

Binoculars are identified by two numbers, for example 10x50: the first is the magnification (how many times larger the object appears compared to the naked eye), and the second is the objective lens diameter in millimeters (how much light the front lenses gather). The larger that second number, the more light reaches the eye — which matters especially for faint objects in low-light conditions.

From that diameter and magnification comes another figure worth knowing when choosing: the exit pupil (aperture divided by magnification). 10x50. 15x70 (for example, the Celestron SkyMaster 15×70, with a manufacturer price of $129.95). More aperture and magnification, geared toward deep-sky observation, but with a clear trade-off: according to El Gran Observatorio and BinocularSky.com, this type of model requires a tripod, because at that magnification and weight it’s no longer comfortable to hold steady by hand for any length of time.

When it does make sense to skip straight to a telescope

Binoculars aren’t the final answer — according to AstroAfición, they’re a transition tool. There are clear signs that a telescope makes more sense from the start:

  • The main interest is the planets.
